Safety guidelines and procedures for club members


General Club Safety

The safety of our members and visitors is our top priority at Twickenham Yacht Club. All members are expected to familiarize themselves with these safety procedures and adhere to them at all times.

Members are responsible for their own safety and the safety of their guests.

Clubhouse & Facilities

  • All members must sign in when using club facilities
  • Children must be supervised by an adult at all times
  • Report any hazards or incidents to a committee member immediately
  • First aid kits are located in the main clubhouse and race hut
  • Fire extinguishers and emergency exits are clearly marked
  • No running on wet surfaces or pontoons

Boat Park & Slipway

  • Wear appropriate footwear when in the boat park
  • Boats must be properly secured when stored
  • Check all equipment before launching
  • The slipway can be slippery – take extra care
  • Ensure trolleys are stored safely after use
  • Keep walkways clear and free from obstruction

In Case of Emergency

  1. Call emergency services immediately if required (999)
  2. Alert a committee member or duty officer
  3. Provide first aid if qualified to do so
  4. Do not put yourself in danger
  5. Complete an incident report form as soon as possible
  6. Inform the Club Safety Officer of any incidents

Man Overboard Procedure

  1. Shout “Man Overboard” immediately
  2. Throw a buoyancy aid to the person in the water
  3. Keep the person in sight at all times
  4. Call for assistance via VHF Channel 16 if needed
  5. Effect rescue only if safe to do so
  6. Call 999 and alert the Coastguard

Junior Sailing Safety

All junior sailors must follow additional safety requirements:

  • Junior sailors must always wear a buoyancy aid when afloat
  • Parental consent forms must be completed before participation
  • Appropriate adult supervision must be present
  • Junior sailors should not sail alone until deemed competent
  • All juniors must complete appropriate training before sailing independently
  • Parents/guardians must ensure juniors understand safety procedures

Required Safety Equipment

All members going afloat must ensure they have appropriate safety equipment:

Personal Equipment

  • Buoyancy aid or life jacket
  • Appropriate clothing for conditions
  • Whistle
  • Mobile phone in waterproof case

Boat Equipment

  • Paddle or oars
  • Bailer or pump
  • Anchor and line
  • Torch (for sailing after dark)
